Need for Speed Payback takes place in the underworld of a fictional open world — Fortune Valley — a gambler’s paradise controlled by a cartel known as “The House.” Players follow a story of betrayal and revenge as three distinct protagonists — Tyler (the Racer), Mac (the Showman), and Jess (the Wheelman) — team up to take down The House. Along the way, they race, drift, go off-road or drag, outrun cops, and rebuild their rides from scrap cars into tuned supercars.Cars are central to the experience: the game supports deep customization, across five distinct car classes (Race, Drift, Off-Road, Drag, Runner), letting you tailor performance to the job at hand — whether drifting through city streets, racing against rivals, or evading police in high-speed escapes.Need for Speed Payback also offers a 24-hour day/night cycle, dynamic missions (street races, heists, off-road events), and a blend of single-player campaign and optional online multiplayer (up to 8 players with PS Plus).
